The roots of The Wreckery lay in the group Plays With Marionettes which formed in 1980, Melbourne. The Wreckery formed in 1984, releasing three albums and numerous singles in their five years; music that ranged from upbeat bluesy-goth-rockers full of fire through to intense gothic ballads full of drama and passion. Members like front-man Hugo Race initially played in both The Wreckery and Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds. Both acts came out of the Melbourne/Berlin scenes that were characterised by drugs and damaged, doomy goth-rock sounds. The Wreckery's music started quite raw and became very polished, very sophisticated lyrically and musically. Perhaps one way to describe The Wreckery is that it's like a midpoint between the wild chaos of The Birthday Party and the subtler later approach Nick Cave had with the Bad Seeds while being unique, distinct and in many ways sonically richer.

Following the dissolution of the Wreckery in 1989 several members have pursued further music careers. For instance, vocalist Hugo Race based himself in Europe for a long time and has released more than a dozen albums with groups like The True Spirit, The Fatalists, DirtMusic, Sepiatone and Long Distance Operators and is still very active as of 2015; Nick Barker had several rock-pop singles & albums reach the Australian top 40 in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Tracks by several of these projects are featured in the playlist below.

Many of the Wreckery's best songs are not on Youtube. You'll discover many of their best songs on the "Past Imperfect" Wreckery Compilation Album. Tracks like: Everlasting Sleep, Bending the Bars, Holy Honey, Kickdown, Governor's Pleasure, I Can't Say, Laying Down Law, the Understudy ... My two all-time favourites are The First Lesson and Darlin' Darlin' - both sadly not on that collection.
