Formed in Perth in 1978, later based in Sydney and then London the Scientists are a very influential post-punk band whose music was often termed Swamp Rock. Well known in Europe the USA and locally, their music is dark, heavy, murky and provided major inspiration for the later waves of international grunge rock of the late 80s and 90s and more recently on the moodier strains of indie-rock of the late '90s and '00s. The band has had several periods of activity including reunion tours in the '00s. The song "We Had Love" was re-popularised when it was used in the 2008 UK gangsta movie RockNRolla. Members have been involved with other notable bands such as Kim Salmon & the Surrealists and the Beasts of Bourbon.
