Formed 1980, originating in Canberra & Sydney, Australia; still producing & touring. The Church are pioneers of neo-psychedelic-new-wave-gothic-rock; dark alternative pop characterised by driving percussion and bass, jangly melodic guitars in the high-register with romantic melancholic lyrics usually sung in a low dreamy manner. This sound & style was very noticable in a later wave of mid-late-80s British gothic-alt-rock music (like The Cult, The Cure, Sisters of Mercy, The Mission, The Smiths and so on). The Church have had numerous top 40 hits in Australia, USA and Europe especially with "Under the Milky Way" which reached No. 2 on the US Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks.
