Formed in 2008, Empire of the Sun is a very successful new-wave dark-synthpop-indie-rock project from Perth and Sydney, Australia. Several of their videos have more than 30,000,000 views on youtube. They reached number 1 in the German charts with 'We are the people', the top 10 in many European countries and the top 40 in many others also with the single 'Walking on a dream'. Their debut album went platinum in Australia, Gold in the UK, USA, lreland and Germany. Their sound includes doses from the pioneers of late-70s-early-80s new-wave synth-rock like Kraftwerk, Yello and Gary Numan; goth-flavoured '80s pop-rock projects like The Cure, Love & Rockets, New Order & Nik Kershaw; plus doses of '60s psychedelia, '70s soul-funk-disco and '90s-'00s electronica; and of course multiple phases of David Bowie's career. The duo have a long history in Australian music with groups like The Sleepy Jackson and Pnau.
